Epson Expression Series
The Epson Expression series of printers are extremely popular because, for many of their early models, you can buy non-original ink very cheaply. For less than five pounds at places such as eBay, you can get a complete set of ink cartridges for your printer making it very affordable for students. However, the down side is that if you let the print head dry up, then it becomes blocked and stops working. I managed to pick up the XP-425 and thought it was a very crafty printer, which knows when you install non-genuine ink and gives you a warning message that such ink will damage your printer. Once you press OK to continue, it then becomes very cantankerous and unreliable. In addition, if you install the latest firmware, then it will no longer accept non-genuine ink cartridges and you get more problems.

Cost / eBay
These printers are often for sale on the second-hand market for as little as ten pounds including postage. You may have to buy new cartridges to see if it has a clogged print head, and if it does, then the automated print head cleaning routine will use up most of the ink! However if you can get a good working one, then it is a bargain.
