The DT3266L is a Digital Clamp Meter manufactured in China, and available through the eBay outlets. This meter can measure AC currents up to 600 A, and AC and DC voltages up to 600 V. It has three range settings of 2 KΩ, 200 KΩ, 2 MΩ, for measuring resistance. This meter also has a live wire test function, during which time an LED lights to indicate a live wire. This is a basic clamp meter and therefore does not have the diode testing function, continuity testing, or buzzer. However, there are other versions of this meter such as the DT3266A, DT3266C, DT3266D, DT3266E, DT3266F, and DT3266G, which have them. In addition, the DT3266C version can also measure temperature.
I bought this because it was going cheap for around five pounds including postage. This must be one of the lowest cost clamp meters I have ever seen and I wanted to see its construction and build. The plastic case has a rugged construction, and the printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication is to a good standard. The main IC comes in a chip on board (COB) package, and the accuracy is, as one would expect from a single chip meter solution.
The 3 ½-digit liquid crystal display (LCD) is extremely clear with 15 mm high digits. The readout was also very fast and remained steady, which is good. I tested some of its basic functions at low voltages and it appears to work as expected.
On the down side, the meter does not have a fused shunt, so you will have to be careful when using the probes. If you overload it, then some of the surface-mount device (SMD) resistors may burn and may require replacement. This basic model “L” cannot measure DC current, which is a serious limitation for general electronics work. Sometimes the clamp did not shut completely and needed additional help to close, however I was able to open it and re-route some of the wires that were obstructing the mechanism.
Overall, it is a good basic meter for less than the price of a cup of coffee. If it has some of the functions that you require, then it could be handy to have around.
It has this wonderful LCD with good contrast.
Cost / eBay
There are many sellers on eBay offering this meter at various prices. The cheapest one was near the five pounds mark and included the postage as well.
