GPS Speaker Replacement

Replacing the voice coil speaker of a GPS is very simple. The NAV-U speaker is rated at 4 Ω, and can provide a maximum of 2 W output. Occasionally the voice coil speaker may fail due to the high temperatures within a car. If you find that the speaker voice becomes crackly, distorted, or very low, then a replacement may be required.

Once you have fixed your NAV-U, you should consider getting a new one and keeping the old one as a spare. The latest ones have great features such as high a definition display. The audio technology has also improved vastly and the sound quality is much better.

How do you replace the speaker on a Sony NAV-U GPS?

How to remove the speaker.

There are plastic tabs, which secure the speaker. The wires terminate with a plug, and therefore soldering will not be required providing the replacement has the same plug system.

Grille and Tabs

Removing the speaker reveals the grille behind it and the recessed plastic enclosure.

Speaker Cone

Here is the other side of the speaker showing the cone, and a new one is usually very loud. The NV-U73T, and NV-U53 models use a circular 30 mm diameter speaker whilst NV-U93T, and NV-U83 use a 20 mm × 40 mm oval speaker.

Here is another view of the cone. Although it is rated at 2 W, it seems to be much louder.
