The Sound of Music was the most popular and profitable musical ever written by the Rodgers and Hammerstein composer-writer duo. It was a Robert Wise production starring the beautiful and talented Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with the arrangement was by Irwin Kostal. It was also one of the most successful Broadway shows with a record-breaking 1442 performances. The production started in November 16, 1959 and ended in June 15, 1963.
I managed to catch a show at the Dominion Theatre in London in 1967 and it was the best I had ever seen. I also purchased an LP record, which is not worth much today as they were mass-produced, but the sound of the original music is priceless. You can grab one of these records from Amazon or eBay for almost nothing, and there are many in near mint condition. It makes an ideal present or gift, or to transport you back into time. Of course, no Christmas is complete without listening to this.
