The Sanyo M4440 has a more advanced audio head, which appears to be a higher specification. As you can see, the shape is different, and the surface is a much tougher and smoother alloy. Consequently, the sound quality is noticeably different when compared to Walkmans with the standard conventional heads.

This shows the audio head of the Sanyo M4440. The head has an azimuth alignment screw on one side. There is also the pinch roller and capstan to the other side. The sound quality of this unit is very good providing you use a good pair of headphones.

Terminals

This shows the terminals of the audio head. There are four terminals with one side as common earth. This appears to be a fully functional head capable or recording, except this unit does not have the recording functionality.

Here is a magnified view of the mirror smooth surface. The vertical gap is so thin that it is almost invisible. The profile shape of this head is very unusual, and it is very reminiscent to that found on the Sony TC-152SD.

Due to the design and high quality of the head, the sound quality of this stereo cassette player was superior compared to some of the high-end players of the time.
