Toshiba KT-S1 Audio Chip

TA7628P

The KT-S1 stereo cassette player uses a pair of TA7628P ICs manufactured by the Toshiba Corporation. Designed for cassette tape recorders, it contains circuitry for the recording function, which is obviously not used in this application.

IC Block Diagram

As you can see from the block diagram above, this IC has within it all the vital circuitry required, thereby minimising the external component count. There is a preamplifier, power amplifier, and buffer amp, which together provide a single chip solution for cassette recorders. When Vcc is 6 V, the power output of the TA7628P IC is 0.6-watts (f = 1 kHz, and THD = 10 %) in an 8 Ω load. However, this IC is also pin compatible with TA7628HP, which can drive a 4 Ω, load providing power output of 0.96-watts. This information might be useful to audio enthusiasts and electronics hobbyists who like to experiment with modification projects.
