Transistor Mounting Kits

Mounting a power transistor is a precise science and requires the correct mounting kit that contains the necessary hardware. For a typical TO-3 package, the hardware usually consists of a mica layer to provide electrical insulation between the transistor body and heatsink. There are also nylon insulating bushes for the screws to prevent them from making electrical connection between the transistor body and the heatsink. Since the metal body of the transistor is also a terminal, there has to be a way to make an electrical connection to it, and for that a solder lug is used. Depending upon the transistor package, the amount and type of mounting hardware required varies. The following diagrams show the package type and the mounting hardware required.
