Raise The Titanic!
Raise The Titanic! is a novel written by Clive Cussler, and printed in 1977. It was also the basis of the television film of the same name. The story is about RMS Titanic, which on 15 April 1912 struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Sea. In this story they raise the Titanic, however, as these things go, it is not a straightforward task. There are perils presented by the sea, the weather, and Soviet spies, which brings multi-dimensional drama and excitement to the story.
The purpose of raising the Titanic was to recover a rare and precious element called Byzantium, which both the U.S. and the Soviets needed for their defence. Back in the 1970s, there were huge advancements in deep-sea submersible technology, and many people had read about them. Hence, this type of story was ideal to capture the reader's imagination. There was also the cold war in progress; hence bringing Soviet spies into the story also brought realism.
In this story, there are references to the Cuban Missile Crisis, Project Jennifer, President William Howard Taft, and Chess Grandmaster Isaac Boleslavsky. All of this periphery helps to build the story and provides credibility that fires the imagination of the reader.
This was Clive Cussler's best selling novel, and the first in a string of many to establish him firmly as a technology writer. Cussler has a wonderful gift of blending drama and technology in a way that captures the imagination. I have found almost all of his books to be a joy to read, and because of his immense knowledge of the sea, his books are also educational.
