Forgotten Voices of the Holocaust

Front Cover

Forgotten Voices of the Holocaust is a book written by Lyn Smith in association with the Imperial War Museum. It is a historically accurate account that contains true stories of survival from men, women, and children who were there during the Holocaust and tells how the Nazi regime murdered over six million people. I thought it was an extraordinary and immensely moving book worth writing about and recommending to anyone interested in learning the history of this period. It succinctly captures how events can snowball into a world of ghettos, camps, and death marches. The accounts of the survivors capture the powerful cries of hope amongst the pain, torment, and unbelievable atrocities. Even amongst such shocking events, accounts of courage and sacrifice came through which you will find moving and remarkable.

The train journey from Westerbork to Auschwitz was about thirty-six hours with no food or drink. We just sat and gave each other the baby. I said to my wife, "If I don’t come back, you may marry again, find a good man who is good for the child." We were bullied out of the train and stood waiting. They separated the men from the women. We turned to the left and walked a little way for two to three minutes. A truck arrived, stopped near us and on the truck were all the women and children and in the centre my wife was standing up with the baby. They stood in the light so I could recognise them. A picture I’ll never forget. All these people were supposed to have gone to undress and go into the gas chambers, and two hours later, those people were ashes, including my wife and child.
