Nakamichi DVD-10
The DVD-10 is a DVD player manufactured by the Nakamichi Corporation. For the video reproduction, it has 10-bit digital to analogue converter (DAC). The audio sampling frequency is 96 kHz and word length up to 24-bits. Some of the surround sound features include 5.1-channel Dolby digital decoder, DTS-compatible digital output, and Dolby "Virtual Surround" through two front speakers. An interesting innovation in this design was the twin-focus laser pickup that provided a more accurate and reliable reading of DVDs and CDs.
CD and DVD players have a limited lifetime and many of these old units from the early 90s are coming to the end of their useful life period. Components such spindle motors and laser pickups, wear out and come to the end of their life period. This often results in the DVD player unable to read discs. A broken DVD or CD player can be costly to repair and specialist parts such as the laser pickup difficult to source. As an engineer, you might end up having to measure the voltage to the laser diode and perform calibration using special discs. You might even have to take the transport mechanism apart, which is time consuming. For this reason, a broken unit is not worth much.
These DVD players occasionally come up for sale on eBay and if it is a unit having trouble reading discs, then many people usually stay away from such a unit. However, a good working player in mint condition that has some life left can sell for hundreds of pounds on the right day.
