Wharfedale Diamond 5
The Diamond 5 (also written Diamond V) is one in a series of loudspeakers manufactured by the prestigious Wharfedale Corporation of United Kingdom. The launch of the first speaker in the series, Diamond 1, was in 1982, whilst the Diamond V made an appearance ten years later in 1992 on the 60th anniversary of the Company founded by Gilbert Briggs. The most notable feature of the Diamond V was that they were small bookshelf speakers with dimensions 265 mm × 178 mm × 205 mm, yet they sounded like large ones may times their size. The Diamond V was a high specification design with power handling capacity of 100-watts. It had frequency response of 47 Hz to 25 kHz, 86 dB sensitivity, and two drive units. The tweeter was 25 mm aluminium dome type, whilst the bass driver was approximately 120 mm (MFHP2 polypropylene). The cabinet was usually black ash effect which went well with the RS22 loudspeaker stands.
Review
Wharfedale loudspeakers are world renowned and even the Japanese, Chinese, and Germans desire these over their own home-manufactured ones. The reason is quite simple; it is due to the research and development lead that the company took decades ago. This has meant that much of their patented technological achievements will be found only in their designs.
- Precision-wound multilayer voice coil
- Oxygen free copper conductors and interconnects
- Substantial binding posts
- High-grade crossover components
Price/eBay
The Diamond series was a huge hit amongst audiophiles and therefore the series still maintains a lead in the market today. If you find yourself in a position to get the Diamond V in the pre-used auction market then it is highly recommended, however the competition is usually fierce and the bidding can go crazy at times. The price can range from as little as fifty pounds to over one hundred depending upon the condition and interest.
