Dil Jabse Toot Gaya Lyrics English Translation

Dil Jabse Toot Gaya is a Pankaj Udhas song featured in the film Salaami, and released in his 2006 Tanhaayee Ghazals album. This song is special because Pankaj Udhas sings it. He is a singer, a writer, and a master of understanding the human condition. He is of Gujarati ethnicity and Gujarati people are usually extremely intelligent. He has that wonderful iconic voice from the Gujarat region in India, and his backing music is often reminiscent of Arabic styles, which makes his music extremely popular throughout the Asian continent. He writes exquisite lyrics taking words and meaning from a wide range of dialects.

There are some interesting choices of words in this song, where the central character describes his whole life turning into an unconscious oblivion described by bekhudee. He describes getting support from a glass or jaam, which would obviously contain alcohol. He describes the feeling of hopelessness with the word bebasee.

English Translation

Dil jab se, toot gaya,

When my heart, broke,

kaise kahen, kaise jeete hain,

how can I say, how I am living,

kabhi jyaada, kabhi kam, peete hain.

Sometimes I drink more, and sometimes less.

Jaam ka hai sahaara, varna kya hai hamaara,

This glass is my friend, otherwise what else is mine?

Yeh dawaa jo naa peete, ham bhala kaise jeete.

If I did not drink this medicine, then how could I live.

Dekhe mudke jahan, hai waha bebasee,

when I look back, there is (only) hopelessness,

bekhudee ban gayee, abb meree zindagee.

(And) oblivion became, my whole life.

In this context, bekhudee approximates to oblivion, to describe a state of unconscious being. However, he describes his life as that.

Saath teraa, choot gaya,

Your companionship, released,

Teraa waada thaa jhootha, pyar kaa rishta toota,

Your promises were all lies, breaking all ties of love,

tune parda hataya, asli chehra dikhaaya,

(when) you lowered your veil, (you) showed your true face,

bewafa, bekhabar, sangdil, beraham,

unfaithful, thoughtless, hard-hearted, merciless,

sochte hai tujhe, kya kahe ham sanaam.

(I) thought of you, what can I say my beloved.

Kisko pata, kisko khabar,

Who thinks, who knows,

zakhmon ko ham kaise seete hain...

how I hide my wounded heart...

Searching for answers from a glass is what most people do, but drinking will not solve anything, except provide you with another problem!
