Tu Tu Hai Wahi Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha English Translation

Tu Tu Hai Wahi Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha is the 1982 Hindi song from the film Yah Vaada Raha. Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle sang it, and the actors were Rishi Kapoor and Poonam Dhillo. This is an interesting iconic song where the couple sound like they are making wedding vows.

The lyrics express wonderful imagery of two waves (lehren) in the ocean merging and never separating. It makes me wonder whether the universe is a deterministic one. I also liked the imagery of a path that splits in two, known in Hindi as mod, and how the couple promise to remain together, and never split. Rishi Kapoor and Poonam performed this well letting R. D. Burman's music do most of the work.

English Translation

Tu, tu hai wahi, dil ne jise, apna kaha

You are the only one that the heart said was mine

tu hai jahan, main hu wahan

Wherever you are, there I am

ab to yeh jeena, tere bin hai saza

to live without you, would be an (unbearable) sentence

Mil jaaye is tarah,

Let us meet like this,

do lehre jis tarah

just like two waves (in the ocean)

phir ho na judaa,

never apart again,

haan yeh vaada raha

yes and keep this promise

main aawaaz hoon to, tu hai geet mera

(If) I were the voice, then you would be my song

jahaan se neraala, manmeet mera

from this entire world, you are my (only) soulmate

kisi mod pe bhi na, ye saath toote

may no path break this union

Mod approximates to the end of a path, which forks left, and right.

mere haath se tera, daaman na chhoote

(may) my hand from yours never separate

kabhi khwaab main bhi tu, mujhse na roothe

also (may) you never be angry with me (even) in any dreams

mere pyaar ki koi, khushiyaan na loote

May nobody steal the happiness of my love

tooje main jahan ke naajar se churaloo

(may) in this world I always steal you with my sight

It is similar to the English alternative, where a person is stolen at first sight...

kahin dil ke khwaan-ne mein tooje ko chhupaloo

(may) I always hide you within my heart’s desires

kabhi zindagi mein pade mushkilein to

(if) in life any difficulties befall upon us, then

mujhe tu sambha-le,

you console me,

tujhe main sambha-lu.

(and) I will console you.
