Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil English Translation
Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil is a 1970 Hindi song from the film Heer Raanjha. Kaifi Azmi wrote the lyrics, the singer was Mohammed Rafi, and the music was by Madan Mohan.
These are interesting lyrics, where he starts out rejecting the world and the people in it. He then highlights the injustices he experienced in his life. He mentions that even those who seek god can find him, yet he cannot even get a glimpse of his sweetheart. What makes this an interesting song is the choice of words that have significance throughout the Asian Continent. Dhoom is an interesting word, for example in Gujarati there is "dhoom-dham", and they all approximate to "ceremoniously", but can also approximate to "expeditiously" in this context.
Mazar approximates to a tomb or mausoleum. Usually a couple, who loved each other in life, are buried together in such a building. This word is very famous throughout Arabic speaking countries. In some places in India, they pronounce it as majjar; however, it is the same thing. It is customary for lights to remain lit until the last one dies, however it is not mandatory, due to the cost and therefore it depends upon wealth. If you are switching off the lights to your mazar, then usually it means you are getting ready to die. In modern times, very few people have mausoleums; however, this act also became an expression of giving up all hope.
Janazah is usually a funeral prayer for the soul of the departed. The rituals, including the prayers are almost the same throughout Asia, and so is the meaning of the word. They usually conduct it outside during the funeral, however, in some places it inside after the funeral.
Yeh duniya, yeh mehfil, mere kaam ki nahi...
This world, these people, are of no use to me...
Kis ko sunaaoo haal, dil ye, bekarar ka,
To whom may I present the state of this heart of a restless person,
bujhta hua chirag ho apne mazar ka.
extinguishing the flame of our mausoleum.
Aye kash bhool jau, magar bhoolta nahi,
I wish I can forget, however I am unable forget,
kiss dhoom se uthata tha, janazah bahaar kaa.
how ceremoniously the funeral prayers of my blossoming were conducted.
Apna pata mile, na khabar yaar ki mile,
I have no idea where I am, nor received news of my friend,
dushman ko bhi naa asi saza pyaar ki mile.
even an enemy would not get such punishment for loving.
Unko khuda mile, hain khuda ki jinhe talaash,
Even those who have sought god, have found god,
mujhko bas ek jhalak mere dildar ki mile.
all I ask for is just one glance of my sweetheart.
Sehra mein aake bhi, mujhko thikana na mila,
Even coming to this desert, and I could not find peace,
gham ko bhulane ka, koi bahana na mila.
to forget my sorrows, I could not even find any excuses.
Dil tarse jis mein pyaar ko, kya samjoo us sansar ko,
What should I think of a world, in which the heart remains thirsty for love,
ek jeeti baazi haar ke, main dhoondoon bichde yaar ko.
in which you lose an already won game, searching for a separated friend.
Dur nigahon se, aansoo bahata hai koi,
In my sight, far away, someone is shedding tears,
kaise na jaaoo main, mujhko bulata hai koi.
how can I not go, someone is calling for me.
Ya tute dil ko jod do, ya sare bandhan tod do,
Either unite this broken heart, or break all ties and bonds,
Aye parabat rasta de mujhe, aye kanton daaman chod do...
O mountains, give me level roads, O thorns, leave my company...
