Akai 4000DS MK2

The 4000DS MK2 was a reel-to-reel tape recorder with 4-track 2-channel stereo/monaural capability. It could accommodate 7-inch reels, and operate at tape speeds of 7 ½-inches per second and 3 ¾-inches per second. Some of its advantages included a one-micron wide head gap, and 4-pole induction motor. It dimensions are 407 mm × 314 mm ×196 mm, and mass 11.1 kg.

This reel-to-reel tape recorder was a high specification unit with frequency response of 30 Hz to 23 kHz, and wonderful Japanese build quality. It often comes up for sale on eBay and the prices can vary depending upon condition. Sometimes you can get one for under a hundred pounds; however a unit in mint condition together with its original box, accessories, and manuals, can cost hundreds of pounds. Usually most units require a service including a belt change. If you are considering acquiring one, then make sure it comes with the dust cover as they are difficult to find in the pre-used markets.
