CD-4 Compatible Cartridge and Shibata Stylus
Since the CD-4 system uses a carrier based FM signal, the required cartridge/stylus must have wide frequency response with the upper limit as high as 45,000-Hz. In order to achieve this, the stylus shape was redesigned. Known as SHIBATA stylus, named after the engineer who led the development team, this shape increases the contact area with the groove fourfold resulting in increased frequency range. It also has the advantage of reducing stylus pressure, increasing service life, and providing better tracking. Consequently, this type of stylus is highly desirable for use even with conventional 2-channel records.
