JVC HA-S4X

The HA-S4X (also written HAS4X) "Xtreme Xplosives" XX were stereo headphones manufactured by the JVC Corporation. They have 40 mm extreme power drivers with neodymium magnets, and deep bass ports. The frequency response is 7 Hz to 23 kHz. In this article the ear pads and jack plug are not original.

Review

I tested it with one of my walkmans and was impressed with the sound quality. The quality is near excellent and the frequency response certainly exhibits that bass and treble range that one would expect from JVC. The 30 Ω coils and neodymium magnets produce a clearly defined audio on my Walkman cassette player, and they were much louder when connected to a hi-fi amplifier.

An advantage of the anti-impact hard rubber body means that they will last a long time, however the headband is very rigid, and the absence of a swivel joint can make it feel like your head is in a vice. Some of this discomfort can be alleviated by using slightly thicker and larger replacement ear pads.

Price/eBay

These headphones occasionally come up for sale and the price depends upon their condition. I managed to get a pre-used pair that simply needed a new jack plug fitted, and new ear pads. Of course, a pre-used pair will also need disinfecting and cleaning, which takes time, but ultimately worth it.
