My First Radio
When I was a whippersnapper I had a small valve radio I bought from a second hand shop for £3.00, and I kept it by the side of my bed fitted with a long antenna wire for shortwave (SW) band reception. I used to listen to BBC Radio 4 or sometimes to BBC World Service stations and drift off to sleep.
BBC Radio 4 was my favourite because of the music at around midnight when "Sailing By" played just before the shipping forecast. It was a very calm repetitive piece of music, which would gently drift me off to sleep. If you were listening to those or any stations on the shortwave band, then it is a real treat to listen to them on DAB radio because they are in glorious stereo and crystal clear. A pocket digital radio is extremely useful for receiving BBC World Service or any other digital station whilst on the move.
