Who is God?

In this ancient Sanskrit passage, the oldest written words on record, God provides his credentials, and identity, in various different ways so that people of that time could understand.

"yatah pravrttih prasrta purani"

I am from whom "yatah" all manifestation "pravrttih" spread out "prasrth" in the beginning of time "purani".

Here god provides his credentials, that he is the one from which everything including the Universe spread out. He is from before the beginning of time. The concept of space spreading out "prasrth" would have been difficult for lay people of that time to understand.

In Sanskrit philosophy, God is simply a function of evolution, based on our understanding of Physical Sciences. This is because our understanding of God increases as we evolve; therefore, it has to be a function of our evolution.

Today we already know about the beginning of the universe, and the big bang. We know that the universe expanded from a singularity, where all time and space began. However, it is remarkable that man had knowledge of these concepts thousands of years prior to Western scientific discoveries.
