Aiwa AF-5050 Service Manual

The AF-5050 was a music center manufactured in 1976 by the Aiwa Corporation. It is a type of hi-fi with integrated amplifier, tuner, cassette deck, and turntable. It usually came with a pair of stereo speakers (EE1, UK1 only). This service manual has the complete schematic, wiring diagram, and service information. This could be useful if your unit is not working and you need to repair it, or change the drive belts.

Review

This is a wonderful bit of engineering from the Aiwa Corporation, and even though it’s old these units are desirable if you are looking for a space-saving all-in one hi-fi. For audiophiles, the belt-driven 2-speed automatic turntable would be of particular interest. The mechanism is driven by a 4-pole synchronous motor. It also has a good tone-arm design with a moving magnet (MM) cartridge. In this design, the amplifier is 10-watts per channel (8Ω) with pure complementary SEPP OTL output stage. The final audio output transistors are 2SC1061 and 2SA671. The sound quality is of course wonderful as one would expect from Aiwa.

A nice feature of these old music centers is that you can play an LP/record and simultaneously record onto a cassette tape. Then for future listening one can simply play the cassette and thereby minimize wear on the record and stylus.

Price/eBay

These units can sometimes come up for sale on the auction site and they are useful especially to those who are into playing records. A unit in good working condition with the original speakers and accessories is desirable and can command a price over the hundred pounds mark.
