JVC CQ-F2 Service Manual

Service Manual

The CQ-F2 was one in a series of stereo cassette players consisting of CQ-F2K, CQ-F2B, CQ-F2D, CQ-F2E, and CQ-F2U, manufactured by the JVC Corporation in 1982. This was a metal tape compatible unit, with ANRS and Dolby B noise reduction systems. The tape transport mechanism was very rugged with Cue and Review facility. The dimensions were 86.5 mm × 140.5 mm × 29.5 mm, and mass 385 g with batteries. This unit is capable of receiving radio with the optional FQ-2E or FQ-2D FM Tuner Pack, which had the same shape as a cassette and fitted into the cassette compartment.

This is an interesting early JVC player that would be difficult to find today. It had power output of 30 mW per channel with 32 Ω load, and required four AA size batteries to produce 6 V. Back then it would have been a technological achievement to have noise reduction on a portable cassette player this small. Consequently, the circuitry uses a pair (one for each channel) of AN7363NS integrated circuits (IC) for noise reduction. The preamplifier IC was LA3160, whilst the power amplifier IC was LA4178. The motor governor used the AN6614.

JVC stereo cassette players are very rare and difficult to find today. They were extremely well made and robust, and consequently still found in the pre-used auction markets. They usually require a drive belt, which is straightforward to replace. This service manual shows how to open the unit for servicing, with diagrams of the parts assembly.
