Toshiba KT-4059 Service Manual
The KT-4059 (also known as KT-V950) was a stereo radio cassette recorder manufactured by the Toshiba Corporation of Japan in 1989. The radio tuner has AM and FM band reception, and the recording system uses an AC bias with magnetic erasure. It has 20 mW per channel audio power output, and the whole unit operates on a pair of AA size batteries. Some useful features include 3-band graphic equalizer, auto-reverse, and built-in microphone. The unit measures 86 mm × 130 mm × 37.5 mm, and has a mass of 255 g without batteries.
Review
This is a lovely miniature stereo cassette recorder design by the Toshiba Corporation. In this design they use advanced integrated circuit (IC) solutions that minimize the component count drastically. The tuner section uses the TA8127F single chip AM/FM radio solution, whilst the tape recorder circuitry uses the AN7109S. The motor governor IC is the NJM2606AM. The overall circuitry is extremely simple and neat, with the exception of the recording bias oscillator having a discrete component design. Providing you use a high quality pair of headphones, the sound quality can be very good. The tape transport mechanism is driven by a single DC motor, and the drive belt is hidden behind the main PCB.
Cost/eBay
Miniature stereo recorders are highly sought after these days and their price is always increasing. These units are sometimes available for sale and the price varies depending upon condition. Due to the outer plastic case, a cosmetically damaged unit is not worth much. However a unit in mint condition in its original packaging and accessories can command up to as much as fifty pounds on a good day.
