Canon FTb Battery Replacement
Replacing the Canon FTb battery is a simple task. The replacement 1.3 V mercury battery model M30 that the manual states is no longer available due to the ROHS directives. The equivalent replacement battery is the PX625A, which is a safer alkaline cell. The manual suggests the Mallory PX-625A or the Eveready EPX-625, which will be difficult to find unless you have a time machine.
The battery is only for the built-in light meter, and the camera works fine without it. If you have used it for many years, you will probably be able to guess the light level without even using the meter. You could also use pocket light meters that are readily available at most online shops.
Opening Battery Compartmnent
A British penny is just thick enough to open the battery compartment. Be careful not to scratch the cover.
Battery Cover
Replacing the battery is easy after removing the metal screw-on cover. It has markings inside indicating 1.3 V. The positive side of the battery makes contact with the spring. When the camera is not in use for long periods, you should remove the battery.
