Antex Vintage Long Life Bits
A soldering iron bit, often referred to simply as a bit, is the usable tip part of the soldering iron, which is replaceable. It is typically made of copper material, plated with other heat-conducting metals. It is available in different shapes, sizes, and types, and used in the field of electronics. If you are into precision electronic soldering, then Antex bits are something you will appreciate. They are typically made of high-grade copper with a layer of iron plating, followed by a layer of chrome plating to ensure it provides a long useful working life.
The secret to the Antex design is in the long sleeve, which slips over the heating element thus ensuring maximum heat transfer from the element to the bit. It enables a small 25 W pencil iron to produce the equivalent power to many larger irons of their competitors.
Replacement Bits
The great thing about Antex soldering irons is that you can get a replacement bit for it very easily. Even an old vintage soldering iron like mine can be fitted with a new bit. If you are looking for replacement bits then eBay, Maplin, and even the manufacturer may be able to help.
The table below shows the models and the bits that will fit them. Hope it helps anyone looking for bits for their vintage iron.

Buying for Schools
If you are buying for schools and thinking of getting some cheap soldering irons made in the Far East then you should reconsider. Those cheap ones will work for a few weeks and then look like the one in the photograph below. The bits will not last as long and it will be an exercise in false economy.
You need to get the Antex soldering iron with long-life bits, which should give your students many years of trouble-free use. The only soldering iron you should consider is the Antex, it comes with a long life high-quality bits that will make soldering a joy for your students.
Replace the Soldering Iron
My friend Rufus… was using this soldering iron bit before I showed him my vintage Antex precision soldering iron. If you have a cheap soldering iron where the solder will not stick, and in the process, the copper pads on the circuit board detach due to the excess heat that you end up applying, then it is time to throw it away and buy a proper Antex soldering iron.
If you are always struggling and sweating all day every time you have to solder one little joint, then chances are you have a poor quality soldering iron bit that is making your life miserable. I think you have suffered long enough, and you have my permission to throw it away and buy yourself a new soldering iron.
