Sony 8FC-59W Flip Clock inside Look
This is the flip clock side of the Sony 8FC-59W. Essentially, it is a mechanism consisting of gears and cogwheels, which control the turning over of the flap cards. An AC motor, powered directly by the mains, drives this mechanism. The 50 Hz mains cycle provides the timing. There is also a mains powered neon lamp for illuminating the display.
The rotor is the drum with red stripes. These stripes help to determine if it is rotating. If your clock is extremely old, this part may not be rotating, and therefore your clock will not work. Usually a starting push to the drum is required for it to begin rotating again. The engineers have thoughtfully provided a square inspection window so you can determine this without opening the unit. If you are lucky, your motor may simply require some cleaning and lubrication. Do not attempt any servicing if you are not a qualified engineer.
