Sony MDR-V55 Repair
Repairing the MDR-V55 is simple for electronic and mechanically minded people. If you are buying pre-used headphones, then there are a number of things to look out for, otherwise you could end up losing time and money. Pre-used headphones usually come with soiled ear pads and therefore it is very likely you will be spending three pounds or more for a new replacement set.
These headphones sound very good and many users are tempted to use them at high volume levels. Consequently, many will have been overloaded resulting in damage to the drive units. The damage can present itself as crackly sound, to one that makes no sound due to a burnt voice coil. A replacement drive unit is expensive and makes repairs expensive.
The metal headband usually has a thin strap of plastic with a channel that houses the wire, which goes to the other side of the headphones. On mine, this plastic strap had broken off, and my impression is that this might be a common fault because it is so thin and requires a tiny amount of stress to break. I was able to professionally re-attach it using some super glue. It took one day for the glue to slow-set and required the use of locking clamps to hold the plastic strip in place.
These headphones have an extremely good flat cord retaining system inside, which prevents the wire from pulling out. However, there are limits to this technology, and in the hands of us Brits, we are capable of anything. Consequently, a small number of headphones will have a damaged cord that may require replacing.
