Sony SmartWatch 2

The SmartWatch 2 (SW2) was one in a series of watches manufactured in 2013 by the Sony Mobile Communications AB Corporation. Its principle purpose was to connect to an Android mobile phone via Bluetooth and alert the user of calls and messages. When not connected, it works as a regular watch. A new watch usually requires 30-minutes to fully charge the battery via a standard USB cable with a micro-USB plug. In this multi-page article you can see how I disassembled it to replace the old battery that was not charging.

I recently bought this broken pre-used watch for repair, because I always wanted to get one when they came out but did not have the money. I like watches and even once had a Rolex which was the finest piece of crafted engineering I had ever owned. However I had to sell all my valuables to raise money, and thereafter never owned a watch until this one.

This Sony one has some useful features such as the NFC function to make it easier to connect via Bluetooth. It also has a touch screen interface, which makes navigation very simple. The wrist strap band is standard 24 mm (0.9-inch) design, which makes it easy to replace. This opens up the possibility of replacing the plastic band with a better looking metal band, which is a very common practice with owners. The SW2 is a very early design with limited features, and today there are a plethora of cheap Chinese clones with more useful functions such as heart-rate and blood-pressure monitoring, and available at auction sites for very little money.

Price/eBay

A brand new SW2 is usually for sale for approximately fifty pounds, whilst a refurbished one for around forty pounds, and pre-used for around twenty-five pounds depending upon condition. If you are buying pre-used, then make sure it has a good battery that holds sufficient charge for a few days because a replacement battery is expensive and not readily available. In addition, replacing the battery involves disassembling the watch, which is not a simple task for everyone and tends to be time-consuming.
