The SL-J1 has a figure-of-8 socket for supplying mains power, and a pair of phono output sockets. In addition, a red-coloured jack socket provides a synchronous recording option with other compatible Technics tape decks.

I have never used the synchronous recording function before, however looking at this circuit extract; it appears that one of the electrical connections from the jack socket connects to the play button circuit for a simple synchronous starting function. The other jack connection connects to an open collector of transistor Q304, which the main microcontroller drives through pin 2. This probably provides synchronisation pulses.
