Sony WM-33 Tape Transport
The Sony WM-33 tape transport mechanism mounts on the PCB, which makes the cost much cheaper as it minimizes the use of raw materials. However, this also makes the construction more complex, and all the parts require fabrication to tight tolerances.
Capstan
In this model, they increased the diameter of the capstan spindle, which works extremely well compared to previous models.
Head Azimuth
The tape head has an azimuth alignment screw, however, in later models; they removed the screw and had a fixed azimuth.
Stereo Playback Head
Here is a highly magnified view of the head. This is a standard head design that I have seen on most Walkmans of that era. On this one, the chrome is flaking off in one corner. It is still good enough to work but will damage the tape when it passes over it.
Terminals
This photograph shows the terminal connections of the playback audio head. It has an independent coil for each channel hence there are four terminals.
