4gamers Pro4-10

The Pro4-10 is a PS4 (Playstation 4) and PSVITA compatible stereo gaming headset manufactured in China. They usually connect to the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s headphone socket through the 4-contact 3.5 mm jack plug. The headset has 40 mm diameter drivers with 16-Ω (approx) coils.

Review

I recently managed to get a pre-used headset, and took them apart for cleaning and repair. It was simple to repair them as it had a broken wire at the jack plug end and all I had to do was to solder a new jack plug. This headset is a basic closed cup design that has some good points such as being foldable and having lightweight plastic construction. Consequently it is not heavy and comfortable to wear for long periods. The extendable plastic headband produces just enough force to press the ear pads against the ears and it was comfortable to wear as on-ear designs go. This force is usually very hard to get right but they seem to have got it right. The pads are fairly simple to replace and just as fiddly as most of the designs out there, however generic pads are cheap and readily available.

I tested these with my Walkman and found the sound quality adequate, however, those who like higher bass than treble will like them especially. Once the ear pads make a good seal against the ear, the bass becomes very pronounced, whilst the treble is average to adequate. Through my Walkman, they were not very loud due to the higher impedance coils; however the sound definition and clarity are good. When connected to my hi-fi amplifier they sound even better and louder.

Price/eBay

This series 4 gaming headset is usually available for sale on eBay and the price can vary from as little as ten pounds (approx). Based upon the construction and sound quality, I would place these in the ten pounds range. They are available in black, red, white, and blue, though the red ones tend to be more expensive and sell out more quickly. Over time these will probably turn out to be classic early designs.
