The Sony WM-EX674 has an automatic tape sensor (ATS) switch, which senses whether the cassette type is metal, chrome, or ferric. The signal from the switch feeds the audio controller, which then adjusts the bias accordingly. An advantage of ATS is that it eliminates the need for large selector buttons on the player, thus giving the Walkman a clean uncluttered look.

The tape switch provides a signal to the microcontroller that there is a tape within the cassette compartment. If this switch does not close, then the player will not start. In addition, if the switch breaks contact whilst the player is operating in Play mode, then the controller shuts OFF the player. During servicing, engineers usually connect a loop of wire across the switch terminals to fool the system, which allows the player to start without a cassette in the compartment.
