WM-BF22 PCB

The Sony WM-BF22 does not have a dedicated chassis for the tape transport mechanism, and instead the cogwheel assembly mounts directly on the printed circuit board (PCB) which provides the rigidity. In addition, the push-button assembly is also simplified, made smaller, and mounted on the PCB. Usually, the mechanism part is separate and the PCB screws onto that. The mechanism uses the least number of springs and cogwheels, and therefore this is an excellent example of extreme optimisation in the production and materials. In terms of production ingenuity, this is one of the most exciting designs.

Replacement cogwheels are virtually impossible to source from any electronics suppliers, and it is unlikely that Sony will have any mechanical parts for a player that is over 20 years old. I would therefore recommend that extra care be taken when using this player.

Notice how the motor mounting has no screws, but instead uses three metal tags that slot through the PCB and then are twisted. This saves money and resources, but more importantly, it is environmentally friendly. This type of design is economical and we will see more of it in the future.
