Nakamichi AV-8 Digital Board

Surround Sound Processing Board

The Nakamichi AV-8 digital board is responsible for the surround sound functions. It has two optical inputs and two coaxial inputs for feeding the digital data stream. Integrated circuit CS4926 resolves the stream into individual channels (two front channels, two rear channels, and one centre channel) which then pass through a set of digital-to-analogue converters. According to brochure specifications, the AV-10 has DTS capability, which the AV-8 does not. However, this board looks very similar to the one on the AV-10 version. The big empty space on this board is where the DTS chip probably goes, however perhaps, changing this board may result in an upgrade. I shall have to do some more research including extract the firmware from the Atmel flash memory chip.
