Sony Remote Not Working
The STR-DE485/STR-DE485E amplifiers require the Sony AV System 2, model RM-U306 infrared remote control. The STR-DE585 (for area code CA only) requires RM-PP506, and for area codes CEL, and CEK, requires RM-U306. People often throw away remotes without realising their worth. The RM-PP506 remote control that came with the STR-DE585, could be programmed for use with audio equipment belonging to other manufacturers, and the user manual provides the necessary codes. For example, you could control a Nakamichi tape deck using code 210.
If the remote stops working, then the first thing to check is the batteries and to make sure that no button is stuck pressed in. Those that are new to using this remote may think that it has broken; however, it is often because they have forgotten to set the main input source first. On this remote, there are six inputs to select from; Video 1, Video 2, DVD/LD, MD/Tape, CD, and Tuner. You need to set this first so that the remote commander can configure the rest of the buttons for the relevant functions. This is also a multi function unit; hence, if you choose CD as the input source, then many of the buttons will provide access to controlling a Sony compatible CD player as well.
One of the most useful features of this remote is that you can directly enter the frequency of the AM and FM bands using the numeric keypad. This is very useful if you knew the frequency you wanted o monitor.
The infrared signal is very powerful in this remote and with a new set of batteries, the signal is so strong that you can point it away from the amplifier and it still works. This remote uses two AA size batteries, which can last for over a year depending upon usage, and people sometimes forget to change the batteries.
Water splashed on the remote can stop it from working. You will need to remove the batteries and leave the remote in a warm place until the water within the membrane keypad has evaporated. It can take days before all the water has gone. This has a very reliable soft rubber membrane keyboard that seems to work well. If yours does not work then, make sure the buttons are not depressed. Very occasionally, the fault lies within the Infrared Receiver Module (IRM) of the amplifier. However, you will need to borrow someone else's working remote controller to confirm this.
