Sony NAV-U Repair

Repairing a Sony NAV-U can be cost effective depending upon which component requires replacement. The touch screen digitizer, battery, and speaker are easily replaceable, and their parts readily available online at a reasonable cost. However, a replacement LCD is still very expensive.

Accessories

The accessories are also readily available and quite cheap for this GPS, many are found cheaply on Google, eBay and Amazon.

Size

The NV-U73T and NV-U53 models are 133 mm × 79 mm × 20 mm in size and mass 210 g. Whilst NV-U93T, NV-U83 models are 145 mm × 87 mm × 20 mm in size and mass 250 g. The bigger models weigh more because they also have built-in Bluetooth wireless technology.

Sockets

On the NV-U93T and NV-U83, you can expect to see a cradle connector, 5.2 V dc socket, USB socket, and a headphone socket. The NV-U73T and NV-U53 has 5.2 V dc socket, USB socket, and external GPS aerial socket. The NV-U73T has an additional TMC aerial option via a 3.5 mm jack socket.

Windscreen Mount

Sometimes a GPS is worth repairing if you can find the replacement parts at a reasonable cost; however, most people simply buy a new one. The great thing about consumer electronics is that it is a commodity market, and every year a new model comes out that does twice as more as the previous year’s model at half the price.

Buy the New Model

Current GPS models are highly advanced and worth getting, because the prices have dropped sharply due to the recession. There are vast numbers of online firms trying to sell last year’s stock at crazy rock-bottom prices and this is an ideal time to get a new GPS if your current one is broken.

Memory Card

On this side, there is a small hole to reset the NAV-U. The memory card slot is for the Sony Memory Stick Duo. You can also use the following memory.

• MagicGate Memory Stick Duo
• Memory Stick Pro Duo

The manual recommends a 4 GB Memory Stick Duo, however not all the different media currently available in the market may work.

The GPS unit only reads data from the Memory Stick Duo card, it cannot write to it. It cannot format the card either, and a PC performs that function.

Mounting Bracket

This shows the mounting bracket to the cradle. The button releases the clamping locks on the bracket and allows the unit to be detached.
