Toshiba KT-S1 Mechanism
The Toshiba KT-S1 tape transport mechanism has a metal chassis and all the components including the push-button assembly consist of metal parts. It is a precisely engineered chassis with metal components, and the quality of the manufacturing is remarkable. The motor is a simple DC type made by the Sanwa Corporation of Japan. On this stereo player, there is a well-engineered capstan flywheel, which provides regulation to the tape speed. In addition, there is an electronic circuit to provide the voltage regulation to the motor.
As the batteries deplete, the speed of the motor usually drops, however, there is a circuit that regulates the voltage to the motor. The circuit consists of a power transistor and a Zener diode providing the regulation function. Unfortunately, there is a limit to the amount of regulation provided, and when the batteries are almost depleted one can notice the speed dropping as the regulator struggles.
Drive Belt
Here is the drive belt connecting the motor pulley to the capstan flywheel. The flywheel design on this unit is one of the most complex compared to other stereo players of that time.
Plastic Cogwheel
Even though the cogwheel is plastic, it seems to have remained intact all these years. The cue and review functions were simple, and very reliable.
Idler Pulley
Here is the idler pulley, which still operates fine.
