Toshiba KT-4046 Tape Transport Mechanism

Tape Transport Mechanism

The KT-4046 tape transport mechanism is extremely complicated because the tape winding spindles / spools not only wind the tape but also act as controls for the fast forward (FF) and rewind (REW) functions. Pressing their respective shafts down achieves this. The mechanism is such that pressing one spindle down causes the other to pop up. Each spindle consists of a pair of springs held in compression by a plastic cap. The cap remains secure due to friction, however over time, it gets loose, and the spindle mechanisms with the springs pop out. Consequently, there are not very many units out there with their tape winding spindles.

Each tape-winding spindle has a cogwheel associated on this side. These require securing when installing the caps from the other side.

The owner has to keep the unit in a cool dry place otherwise; the plastic cogs degrade over time. Pressing the play button provides a very "crunchy" feel because of the plastic cogwheels engaging.
