Canonet 28 Repair
As you can see, the battery wires and spring terminals are below the viewfinder module. Therefore, this repair will involve removing the viewfinder module. Acid fumes can cause much damage over a long term, and even the wires were no longer conducting due to the corrosion of their copper under the insulation.
Luckily, there is a plastic cover secured by two screws. The battery springs attach to this cover, and therefore it has to come out.
Removing the cover, we see that there is some battery electrolyte, which has now hardened. The shiny surfaces indicate areas where the acid reacted with the plastic causing it to melt. All of this requires cleaning with a neutraliser.
I replaced the corroded springs with these new springs, and used hot melt glue to hold them in place.
A linkage from the zone focusing mechanism on the front plate connects to the vertical axis needle assembly. There are no screws or c-clips involved in this linkage. It is simply a pin, which situates between forks.
A sliding linkage has a long pin at the end, which engages into the shutter mechanism behind the lens on the front plate. When installing the front plate, you will need to ensure the distance "d" of the linkage is correct by pushing it part way and holding it there. This distance has to be correct for the linkage pin to engage into the correct place.
