Canonet 28 Review

Review

This Canonet 28 Rangefinder is a simple point and shoot camera with zone based focusing like the bestseller Olympus Trip 35. There were two versions of the Canonet 28, and this earlier version has the Canon Inc logo. It uses a pair of standard "AAA" dry cells, whilst the later 1970 version uses a 1.35 V button cell equivalent to the Mallory PX-625.

In comparison with the QL17, there are many differences. It has a hot shoe socket whilst the Canonet 28 has a flashcube socket. The battery type is also different for the QL17, which uses the PX625.

When you are done with this camera, make sure you store it without the battery, because battery acid can cause a lot of damage to the internal circuitry and PCB. My reference model was in a great condition from the outside, but had battery acid damage inside, and the electronics had melted, but that is fine for me because it is an opportunity to open it! In the following sections of this multi-page article you can see how to open it for repair.
