Marantz CD-330 Mechanism

The Marantz CD-330 Transport Mechanism was progressive for its time and boasted some new features such as dual flywheel, and total mechanism shut off.

Dual Flywheel

Since this is primarily a portable recorder, there is going to be a wobble in speed when the unit moves around. To prevent this from happening, they used two flywheels, which rotate in opposite directions. This way, the forces that create the wobble will be equal and opposite cancelling each other out, thereby keeping the tape speed uniform.

Total Mechanism Shut Off

The tape transport mechanism on this unit is interesting, as it has a total shut off system, which will shut off the tape transport when the tape reaches the end. This happens during playback, record, rewind, and fast forward, operations.
