National Panasonic T-100D Review

The sound quality produced by the Class B germanium-transistor output stage together with the open magnet speakers is extremely good. Back in 1966, it would have been a novelty feature to have a world radio with hi-fi quality sound, but it makes a huge difference to the enjoyment of the radio. At full volume, the sound is ear splitting loud, and simultaneously very clear without any distortion. The sound quality is very much in league with the Zenith Transoceanic 3000-1, which also has the same type of output stage consisting of germanium transistors.

This radio does not have a telescopic aerial, but instead has a square frame at the back, which unfolds. I was impressed that it provided good shortwave reception, because other radios usually require a long telescopic aerial.

This radio does not appear to have band-spread for SW bands, but instead has a fine tuning knob to tune into the individual stations. The sensitivity and selectivity were extremely good, and many local stations on the medium wave band were exceptionally clear.

The only one down side was the tuning dial, which is plastic and not very clear. Over the years, it becomes yellow, which in addition to the original cream colour makes it look too dark. However, it is not such a big deal, because the nice warm sound makes up for this deficiency.

This is definitely worth having because it has a very iconic look that would look nice in a period drama set. It certainly has that 60s look that many would like in their living rooms. I suppose that is why they are so collectable.
