Here are some photographs of the HPS5000 before repair. As you can see, they look scary as they were in a very bad condition; however, this is exactly the sort of thing I like as I can get the chance to open them and study their design, and how they wear.

The old pads measured 8.5 cm × 7.5 cm from the outside, and the inner hole was 5 cm ×3.5 cm. The headband foam strip was 14 cm × 1.7 cm. These are approximate dimensions as they were from an old pair that had stretched over the years.

During disassembly, I made three piles consisting of the plastics heading for the kitchen sink, perishables which after measurements, I decided to throw away. Knackered wires and inner liners went in the bin as well. Finally, a group of drivers, which I checked with a multimeter to see if their coil was still working.

Interestingly, when I opened up one of the cups, the magnet fell out. This was the reason why one side was not working. After a closer inspection, it appeared that there was insufficient glue to bond it and therefore after a period, it dries out and the magnet falls out.
