If you need to replace the jack plug, then you will need to solder three wires to a new 3-pole jack. The red and blue wires carry the audio signal, whilst the copper coloured is the ground.

To remove the existing wire, there is a clever retainer system, which involves removing the silver-coloured plastic layer on one side of the cup. This plastic hides a pair of screws that secures the wire clips. If you undo those, then you can remove the whole wire.

The jack plug is extremely robust and the wire retaining system works very well.
