Avometer Model 7 Mk2 Removing Meter Movement

If you have bought a used AVO Model 7 Mk2, then chances are that the meter dial and glass will have years of dirt on them and will require cleaning. Occasionally the glass can get loose and even detached from the front panel. In these situations, you have to remove the meter movement first to affect the repairs. On the model 7, there are only two screws, which secure the meter unit, and the whole unit comes off together with the dial. There are also two wires to the meter, which have to be desoldered. These are just photographs that I took when repairing my meter and you should consult the manufacturer’s service documentation for more detailed information.

On my meter, there was a huge amount of dirt on the inside of the glass and the dial, and cleaning those surfaces made a huge improvement to the meter. Of course, you have to be extremely careful when cleaning the dial because it is easy to bend the needle and damage the movement.

When cleaning the glass and dial, I used a gentle mixture of windscreen wash and water, and some soft white tissue, and it was surprising to see how much grime had accumulated over the years.
