AVO 8 Specification and Features
The AVO 8 MK 2 had revolutionary features and specifications. It was one of the highest spec meters of its time, which became very popular worldwide.
"REV. M.C." Switch
The most annoying thing about conventional meters is when you have to swap over the probes for measuring negative voltages. If you were to do that throughout the day, then the test leads would tangle up.
The solution was very simple, which was to install a push-button switch "REV. M.C." to reverse the current to the moving coil meter. Although it was something very simple, it turned out to be the most useful feature.
The same company philosophy to innovate makes Megger one of the leaders in meter design. It is well worth having a look at some of their modern meters, available from online shops.
Overload Protection Cut-Out
One of the reasons why these meters continue to operate even today is because of the overload protection mechanism, which provides a high degree of protection to the meter.
These meters can tolerate much misuse and they continue operating with the same performance. This type of meter is very useful for electronics students who may not be familiar with certain circuits or know the voltages to expect from them.
During an overload condition, the spring loaded knob releases from its normal position thereby breaking the overload circuit. One simply has to depress the knob to reset the unit again.
If the cut-out locking mechanism on your AVO no longer works, then here is a photograph to show how the spring installs.
