Deflection Coil

Deflection Coil

A deflection coil is an electronic component and a part of the electron gun assembly in a television cathode ray tube (CRT). Its purpose is for creating a rapidly changing powerful magnetic field, which deflects the beam of electrons to establish a raster on the screen. The coil consists of copper windings shaped to fit around the electron gun assembly.

There are usually two coils, where one coil controls the movement of the beam side-to-side, whilst the other controls the vertical movement of the beam.

The side-to-side movement of the beam, known as horizontal scanning, produces a horizontal line. However, in order to create a raster, each line has to be repositioned one-step below the next. In this way, a complete raster consisting of 625 lines forms the basis of a single frame of image. Another deflection coil, which is part of the vertical deflection circuit, controls the positioning of each horizontal line.

Application

Usually, CRT display screens employ these types of coils. A CRT based television or computer monitor will have them.

Issues

Deflection Coil - Side View

In recent times, there have been studies conducted regarding high frequency oscillation coils and the rapidly changing powerful magnetic fields that they produce. In particular, there have been papers suggesting that they may affect cellular mechanisms in children’s brains.

Although it may require conclusive proof, the good news is that modern LCD televisions do not employ a CRT or such coils.

Buy a Modern Television

The great thing about a modern television is that it does not require a bulky and heavy cathode ray tube bombarding electrons towards your head. Back in the Victorian days cathode rays were supposed to be good for you, same as lead in paint, however, these days, it is probably best to be without them.

The latest LCD panels are only three inches thick and mounted on a wall. There are some great online deals, and some of the ones on Google are the lowest cost compared to anywhere else. A number of online shops that overstocked from last year are constantly advertising just to empty their warehouses, so have a look, and see if you can grab a great bargain today.
