1984 G. I. Joe Mobile Field Unit
This 1984 mobile field unit had a powerful transmitter, and consequently grown-ups found it useful as well since the device complies with part 15 of the FCC rules. The radio circuitry uses around two transistors to form the power amplifier to drive a conventional loudspeaker. The remaining two to three transistors form the transmitter circuitry or receiver circuitry depending upon the position of the configuration switch. In order to make efficient use of the components, the switch configures the circuit to form either a radio receiver or a transmitter.
It also had a red coloured switch marked "Signal", which was useful for sending messages in Morse code.
The height of the mobile field unit from the base to the carrying handle is approximately 22 cm, and 38.5 cm from the base to the tip of its aerial. The total width is 20.5 cm with both handsets hooked in place.
