Onikuma Model K5 Disassembly for Modifications

Disassembly for Modifications

After repairing the ONIKUMA Model K5, a thought occurred to me that I could customise these headphones for my personal use. Firstly, I do not play console games as I do not have the time these days; however I love the sound quality and, therefore a modification of the wire just for hi-fi use is much better for me. I figured a nice thick cable would work fine, but then remembered the Technics RP-DH-1200 which has a stereo jack socket that the wire plugs into. This allows one to connect wires of different lengths depending upon the use. Hence a short wire with in-line microphone could be used when using it with a Smartphone, and a long wire for use when watching television (one day when I get one!). Hence I decided to rip out the wiring and install a simple jack socket, and use a ready-made wire I bought on eBay for two pounds.

I decided to remove the boom microphone as it tends to attract too much attention. I wanted something inconspicuous and low key and therefore an in-line microphone was more to my taste. I do not have very many friends and usually do not get any phone calls hence it was of no use to me. The LED illumination and trailing USB wire was also of no use to me as it tends to draw attention, hence that had to go as well.

I also had another idea to install independent active noise cancelling. The ear pads already do a great job of isolating the outside noise; however I wanted to add something extra for when travelling in a plane or helicopter. An independent noise cancelling system would consist of dedicated drivers and circuit installed within the headphones and all I would need to do is to add another jack socket for supplying power to the circuits. The third idea was to install additional drivers within the ear cup space to make true surround sound. I also wanted to change the colouring of the headphones and figured red and silver would look amazing. Hence, in true Iron Man style, I decided to take the headphones apart and redesign them for my use and taste.
