Here, you can see the inside of my sidewinder force feedback pro joystick when I took it apart for cleaning and servicing. The enclosure does a very good job of keeping the dust away, and most of the parts can be removed for cleaning and lubrication. I was impressed with the large heavy-duty motors, which produces powerful torque. The motors also have cut-out windows, which I was able to use for cleaning purposes. Of course it goes without saying that one should always take electro-static discharge (ESD) precautions when handling the main board. If the main board fails, then it is highly unlikely you will find a replacement. Another nice design feature is that most of the wires have plug terminations, hence it is possible to remove the main board without having to desolder the wires.
