Nokia 3310 Port Mod & Firmware Flashing
The Nokia 3310 has four copper pads behind the battery to make an interface connection for the FBus and Mbus communications. Simultaneously, the phone draws power from the battery, and therefore a special connector with a battery cradle is used. This connector sits in place of the battery, and then the battery fits on the connector.
In 2000, the connector cables were not readily available and I was looking for a way to make a connection with these copper pads.
Ribbon Cable and Socket
I decided to install a ribbon cable because it is thin and folds underneath the battery without obstructing it. The ribbon cable came from an old CD-ROM drive that was broken. The cable has four conductors and connects to the sled motor. I also removed its surface-mount socket from the PCB to use in my project.
Connecting the Ribbon Cable to the Socket
As you can see, the copper pads on the phone are in a diamond shape configuration, whilst the pads on the ribbon cable are in a square configuration. To solve this problem, I decided to use very thin wires, which would bend easily so that I could connect the pins as required. It seemed to work quite well.
